Our History

The story began with two brothers, Arnold Sikking and Cornelius Sikking in 1920; they boarded a cattle boat from Warmouth Holland to the United States. They resided in Passaic, NJ paying room and board with the Van Stein family for a few years. After a few years, they decided to buy ground and start a flower business. They purchased 25 acres on East Oak Road from the Giacomelli family in Vineland, NJ. Arnold and Cornelius both built their homes on the property before they married. They built greenhouses and purchased early Easter bulbs from Holland such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinth and peonies. In 1940, the brothers decided to go in different directions, Cornelius went into the greenhouse business with potted plants and flowers and Arnold decided to purchase gladiolus bulbs from Holland and start a wholesale business with his sons, Peter and John. In 1957, Peter and John bought more ground on Maple ave., Vineland and started their own wholesale gladiolus farm, shipping the whole East Coast and Canada. Moving to the third generation, the sons of Peter Sr. and John, Peter Jr. and Michael are continuing the farm operation. In 1989, they decided to experiment with cut sunflowers to diversify their operation. With a lot of experimenting with varieties and cultural practices sunflowers has become a successful part of the business. In addition to the gladiolus, we also grow lilies, cornflowers, iris dahlias and most recent peonies. We are constantly looking into new varieties of all types of cut flowers to branch out to. Today, Sikking Farms now operates over 200 acres of cut flowers.
